Small review: Personal Property (1937)

Directed by: W.S. Van Dyke

Starring: Robert Taylor, Jean Harlow and Reginald Owen

Plot: This synopsis is not that great and Wikipedia's is too long but it will have to do.

Robert Dabney returns to his family after trouble with the law. The sheriff gets him a job watching the house and furniture of widow Crystal Wetherby.

Thoughts:

This one was on my "want to watch" on the MUBI site for quite a while until it was finally uploaded to YouTube for One Night Only.

Like Liz Taylor, I am an apprehensive fan of Jean Harlow and this is the first film I truly enjoyed her in. Her and Robert Taylor just sizzle on-screen (then again he did with almost anyone) with his ideal profile, rakish-like grin and his novel approach to flirting. The classic screwball comedy that has the cliche but fun story of the "you annoy me" "now I love you" going on.

This might not have much going in way of a plot but it was still enjoyable and the type of movie I go back to every so often because I love Robert Taylor as a romantic comedian and this was notably Jean's second-last completed film before she died of renal failure.

4/5

I've come to discover that you are a huge Robert Taylor fan...something we have in common, as he hovers at around 7 on my all-time favorite actor list. I watched one of his early films the other night. He was 25 in the film...and VERY handsome.

Anyhow, I wanted to respond to you about Net Flix. Yes, they do offer a free trial, with no strings attached. You can sign up for it, but I think you put in your credit card #, which they will not charge if you cancel before the month is up. You would have to choose which plan you want (streaming or DVD's in the mail..."My Foolish Heart, I think, is streaming only). Anyhow, that is how we originally got on NF, but we ended up not cancelling. However, at one point in our membership, we went on hiatus for 3 months, and that worked very smoothly. All we had to do was go onto our account page and mark that, which is probably exactly what you do for cancelling.

Hope that helps.

Have a great evening,
Patti

Yes, I think I adore Robert Taylor ;)

I don't use credit cards so I can't use it then, hopefully someone will upload it on YT and I'll catch it there, or TCM.
